Watson's Last Second Shot Sends Men's Basketball Past Grand Canyon

EDINBURG – Freshman Elijah Watson hit a jumper with 2.4 seconds remaining to send the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team past the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 73-72 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The Broncs (8-13, 2-3 WAC) trailed 72-70 after a DeWayne Russell layup with 12 seconds left. Watson went to the basket and got fouled, hitting 1-of-2 free throws. On the ensuing inbound pass, junior Shaquille Hines knocked the ball away and freshman Dan Kimasa grabbed it. He then passed the ball to Watson who connected to give the Broncs the lead.
 
Matt Jackson fired the next inbound pass to half court, where freshman Isaiah Hobbs picked it off to end the game.
 
Senior Shaquille Boga led three Broncs in double-figures scoring with 18 points and a career-high tying seven assists. Hines also had 18 points. Sophomore Janari Joesaar posted his fifth double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds (five offensive) and four assists. Watson finished with a career-high seven points, a career-high six rebounds and six assists.
 
Joshua Braun led the Antelopes (11-10, 2-2 WAC) with 25 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Russell scored 15 points with five assists. Ryan Majerle finished with 13 points. Daniel Alexander scored 10 points.
 
Boga, Joesaar and Hines all made jumpers as the Broncs jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Antelopes scored the next six points to tie the game, but the Broncs made five of their next seven shots while holding the 'Lopes 0-for-5 from the field to go on a 10-1 run and take a 16-7 lead.
 
Alexander followed with a three and a layup to spark a 14-2 run that saw the Antelopes go up 21-18 with 8:28 remaining, but Joesaar responded with a three as the Broncs scored seven-straight points as part of an 11-2 run to go up 29-23 five minutes later.
 
The Broncs pushed their lead to 10 twice early in the second half on a layup and then a three by Boga. Then, after the 'Lopes pulled within four, a Hines jumper put the Broncs up 53-43 with 12:48 to go.
 
The 'Lopes responded with an 18-6 run to pull within 61-59 on a Jackson three, but the Broncs' pushed their lead back out to seven on a Hines layup and a Boga three.
 
The 'Lopes tied the game on a pair of free throws by Russell that made it 66-66, but a Hines jumper gave the Broncs the lead back.
 
Braun then hit back-to-back layups to put the 'Lopes up 70-68 before Boga tied the game on a jumper with 43 seconds left.
 
The Broncs play their next three games on road starting on Saturday at 8 p.m. at defending WAC Tournament Champion New Mexico State.
