Box ScorePHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team's four-game winning streak was snapped with a 69-54 loss to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes on Saturday at Antelope Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs (11-9, 4-1 WAC) with 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
August Touchard led the Antelopes (7-10, 1-3 WAC) with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Cheyenne Hedrington scored 14 points with eight rebounds.
Astera Reed scored 11 points with seven rebounds.
Touchard hit a pair of immediate baskets as the 'Lopes scored the first nine points of the game. Junior
Rickell Preston hit a jumper at the 16:09 mark as the Broncs responded with a 9-2 run to pull within 11-9 three minutes later.
The Broncs tied the game for the first time on a layup by freshman
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir that made it 13-13 and then took the lead on a pair of free throws by senior
Cha'zaye Wright. After the Wolverines tied the game, the Broncs took the lead back at 18-15 when senior
Cherrell Price converted a three-point play with 6:51 remaining.
The Broncs still led 19-17 with 5:41 to go, the 'Lopes closed the half on an 11-1 run to go up 28-20.
The Antelopes led by 15 with 8:45 remaining the second half, going up 52-37 on a Reed three-pointer. The Broncs responded with a 10-2 run to pull within seven on a three by Kjartansdóttir, but that's as close as they got.
The Broncs kick-off a three-game home stand by hosting first place New Mexico State (5-0 WAC) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse. With a win, the Broncs will pull into a tie for first place. Doors open at 1.
