Box ScoreNEWARK, N.J. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders 59-54 on Wednesday at Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
Sophomore
Shawnte' Goff led all scorers with 22 points while senior
Brittany Bush added 12 points with six rebounds. Junior
Rickell Preston chipped in seven points with 10 rebounds and a career-high six steals.
The Highlanders (8-10) had three players in double figure scoring with Leah Horton and Nicole Maticka scoring 14 points each while Martina Matajcikova added 12 points and five assists.
The Broncs (7-8) got out to the early lead after a jumper by Preston made it 6-3. After a three-pointer by Matejcikova that gave the Highlanders the 11-9 lead, the Broncs scored six straight points that were capped by a pair of Goff free throws that gave them the 15-11 lead.
The Highlanders then responded with an 18-1 run to regain the lead as they took the 31-23 lead into halftime.
In the second half, NJIT grabbed their biggest lead of the game after a layup by Matejcikova made it 40-27 with 14:12 left to play. Later in the half, a pair of free throws by Bush got the Broncs back to within three at 51-48 with 3:53 left in the game.
The Highlanders got back-to-back three pointers by Matejcikova and Camerin Spahn to push their lead to 57-48 with 3:02 left to play as they Broncs' rally just fell short.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday when they open WAC play against Chicago State at 2:05 p.m.
