EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros volleyball fell to the Seattle U Redhawks 1-3 (12-25, 16-25, 25-23, 11-25) on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a program record crowd of 1,341.
The previous record was 1,218, set on Aug. 28, 2012.
The Vaqueros (8-12, 1-5 WAC) have now drawn 3,768 fans across seven matches this season, the third-highest single-season total in program history, behind only 2013 (6,478) and 2012 (5,109).
Sophomore
Bojana Mitrovic and junior
Alisha Watson led the Vaqueros with eight kills each. Sophomore
Tina Sekulic had 19 assists while redshirt junior San Benito alum
Kasey Sanchez had 18 digs.
Martina Samadan led the Redhawks (12-7, 4-2 WAC) with 12 kills on .360 hitting to go with nine blocks.
Jelena Vujcin had 11 kills, 10 digs and five blocks.
Kerry Lane had 41 assists while
Iris Ivanis had 17 digs.
The Vaqueros took their lone set victory in the third, despite going down 3-11. The Vaqueros outscored the Redhawks 22-12 the rest of the way, starting with a 6-0 run that included a kill and an ace by Mitrovic. The Vaqueros tied the set for the first time at 14 on an ace by junior
Megan Dempsey. Two serves later, with the set tied at 15, the Redhawks scored four-straight points and five of six to go up 20-16. Watson, however, had three kills down the stretch, including the one that tied it at 23, and an ace to give the Vaqueros set point, to complete the comeback.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 12 p.m. when they host Utah Valley. Doors open at 11 a.m.
