CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros volleyball team swept the Chicago State University Cougars 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-12) on Thursday at the Jacoby Dickens Center.
Sophomore
Bojana Mitrovic led the Vaqueros (9-15, 2-7 WAC) with 12 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Senior
Haley Durham had 11 kills on .381 hitting with three blocks. Junior
Alisha Watson had 10 kills and three blocks.
Logan Miller led the Cougars (1-23, 0-10 WAC) with nine kills.
The Vaqueros out-hit the Cougars .245 to .058.
The first set was tight early, with the Cougars taking a 13-12 lead, but after a timeout, a Durham kill sparked a 10-3 run as the Vaqueros pulled away for a 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros rode that momentum into the second set, as freshman
Dubravka Vukoja served up a pair of aces to help the Vaqueros go up 4-0. Later, with the set tied at nine, Mitrovic and Durham came up with kills to bookend a 4-0 run to give the Vaqueros the lead. And then, with the lead cut to 16-13, Watson had back-to-back kills as the Vaqueros scored five-straight points en route to a 2-0 lead.
The third set was tight early as well, but with the Vaqueros down 4-5, a Watson started and ended an 18-4 run with a kill and a block, respectively, as the Vaqueros pushed the match out of reach.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they visit Missouri-Kansas City.
