Volleyball Sweeps Chicago State

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros volleyball swept the Chicago State University Cougars 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-20) on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
Sophomore Bojana Mitrovic led the Vaqueros (8-9, 1-2 WAC) with 23 kills on .391 hitting with 14 digs for her sixth double-double. Junior Alisha Watson finished with nine kills while senior Haley Durham had a career-high tying four aces. Freshman Dubravka Vukoja had a career-high 43 assists.
 
Elli Woinowsky led the Cougars (1-16, 0-4 WAC) with 15 kills on .303 hitting. Corey Davis had 28 assists.
 
Mitrovic and Watson had a pair of early kills as the Vaqueros jumped out to a 3-0 first set lead. The Cougars scored the next four points to tie it. The set was still tied at 9 when Mitrovic had three kills and Durham had three aces to give the Vaqueros a 15-10 lead. The Cougars responded with three aces of their own, one by Melina Staengle and two by Shontanae Addison, to come back and tie the set 16. The set stayed tight from there, with the Vaqueros getting to set point on a Mitrovic kill at 24-23. A Woinowsky kill tied it, but junior Megan Dempsey came up with back-to-back kills to end the set.
 
The second set was tight throughout, with neither team going up by more than one until the Vaqueros took a 15-13 lead. The Cougars scored the next three to take the lead, and then, with the set tied at 17, back-to-back kills by Mitrovic kicked off a 5-0 run as the Vaqueros took a 2-0 lead.
 
The third set had a similar start to the second set, with the first multi-point lead coming when a Watson ace gave the Vaqueros a 13-11 lead. The Vaqueros and Cougars traded points from there, but then, with the Vaqueros' lead at 14-13, a Mitrovic kill sparked a 4-0 run as the lead ballooned to 18-13. The lead was still five at 20-15 when the Cougars scored four-straight to pull within one, but with the score 21-20, Watson had three kills in a span of four serves to end the match.
 
The Vaqueros are back in action on Thursday at 9 p.m. when they visit CSU Bakersfield.
