LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team secured its first-ever Western Athletic Conference victory by upsetting the defending WAC Champion UNLV Rebels, who are receiving votes in the latest NSCAA Top 25 poll, 1-0 on Sunday at Johann Field.
The Vaqueros (4-5-1, 1-1-0 WAC) broke through in the 35
th minute when redshirt sophomore
Teemu Vaarakallio scored his first goal after a scramble in the box off a corner kick.
Junior goalkeeper
Leo Castillo (3-5-1, 1-1-0 WAC) made five saves for his second shutout.
Richard Garness (5-3-0, 1-1-0 WAC) made one save.
The Rebels (7-3-0, 1-1-0 WAC) outshot the Vaqueros 11-5, including 5-2 on goal.
The Vaqueros return home on Friday to face No. 25 Utah Valley at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Gates open at 6.
