Men's Soccer Picks Up Win Over CSU Bakersfield

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team beat the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 3-0 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

It was the second time the Vaqueros (5-11-1, 2-7-0 WAC) have scored three goals in a match this season after previously beating Huston-Tillotson 3-0 on Aug. 28.

Junior Hanna alum Juanito Garcia scored the game-winning goal in the 39th minute when he picked up a loose ball in the box and shot it in to the right side of the goal. It was Garcia's team-leading third goal of the season.

That was it until the final seven minutes of play, when sophomore Olli Tynkkynen scored on a penalty kick for his second goal, and redshirt freshman Raul Fierro forced a ball into the net for his first-career goal off an assist by senior Archie Massen.

Roadrunners (7-5-4, 4-3-2 WAC) goalkeeper Oscar Gloveus (2-1-1, 1-1-1 WAC) made seven saves.

Junior goalkeeper Leo Castillo (4-11-1, 2-7-0 WAC) played the first half for the Vaqueros before redshirt sophomore Mission-native Jorge Medina made two saves in the second half to complete the shutout.

The Vaqueros outshot the Roadrunners 13-10, including 10-2 on goal.

The Vaqueros close out the season on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host Houston Baptist. There will be a pre-match ceremony honoring Massen. Gates open at 1.
