YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Eastern Michigan University Eagles 78-56 on Saturday at the EMU Convocation Center.
Sophomore
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir led the Vaqueros (3-2) with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, with six rebounds. Junior
Mary Savoy scored nine points with 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Freshman
Bernesha Peters scored nine points on a trio of three-pointers. Freshman
Idil Türk also scored nine points while hitting a pair of threes.
Janay Morton led the Eagles (2-0) with 19 points with five rebounds, five assists and seven steals.
Cha Sweeney scored 18 points with four rebounds and three assists.
Savoy gave the Vaqueros the lead with a layup during the opening possession, but
Phillis Webb used layups to bookend a 12-0 run to give the Eagles a 10-point lead.
Peters nailed back-to-back threes to bring the Vaqueros within 12-8, but the Eagles scored the next seven points to push their lead back out to 11. It was still an 11-point game at 27-16 after a Savoy three at the end of the first quarter, but
Sera Ozelci hit a pair of threes as the Eagles scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to go up 37-16.
Türk responded with a three to spark a 7-0 to bring the Vaqueros within 14, and then Kjartansdóttir and Peters hit threes in the closing seconds of the half to cut the deficit to 49-36.
The Vaqueros were still within 13 after a free throw by freshman
Nichele Hyman early in the third quarter, but that's as close as they got.
The Vaqueros continue this seven-game road trip on Tuesday at 9 p.m. at UC Santa Barbara.
