Box ScoreFORT WORTH – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's basketball team overcame a 14-point deficit before falling late to the TCU Horned Frogs 71-67 on Saturday at the University Recreation Center.
Zahna Medley led the Horned Frogs (5-1) with 31 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Jada Butts and Jordan Moore added 10 points each while Moore chipped in nine rebounds.
Junior
Shawnte' Goff paced the Vaqueros (4-3) with 22 points, two rebounds and three assists. Junior
Anushka Maldonado posted her first double-double of the season after scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Junior
Mary Savoy added eight points and 11 rebounds.
The Horned Frogs opened with back-to-back buckets before senior
Rickell Preston got the Vaqueros on the board with a layup that made it 4-2 TCU, who extended their lead in the first quarter to 19-9 after a three-pointer by
Caitlin Diaz with 2:07 left in the first. TCU used a pair of threes by Butts and Medley to close out the first quarter with a 26-12 lead.
The Vaqueros' defense stepped up and allowed the Horned Frogs just nine points in the second quarter while finding their groove offensively. Savoy scored four of her seven first half points right out of the gate that made it 30-18 TCU with 6:50 left in the first half.
Goff got going in the second, where she scored seven of her 10 first half points. Goff knocked down a three-pointer to cut into TCU's lead 32-21. After a three from freshman
Idil Türk and a jumper by Preston, Goff scored off back-to-back steals to close out the half with a score of 30-35 in favor of the Horned Frogs.
TCU opened the third quarter by pushing their lead back to 10 points after a three-pointer by Medley made it 42-32 but the Vaqueros responded with a 12-4 that was capped by another steal and a layup by Goff cutting into the Horned Frog's lead 46-44.
Later in the third, a three-pointer by Maldonado and a jumper by Preston tied the game before TCU regained the lead at the end of the quarter 55-54. A pair of free throws by Preston at the start of the fourth gave the Vaqueros their first lead of the game at 56-55.
TCU regained the lead with a pair of free throws but Maldonado hit a layup and knocked down the free throw to complete the three-point play making it 59-57 UTRGV.
Freshman
Bernesha Peters made a layup to give the Vaqueros the 61-57 lead with 5:37 left in the game and then Goff made it 63-59 with a layup. Later in the fourth, the Horned Frogs got a three-pointer from Medley that gave them the lead for the last time as they closed out the game on a 12-4 run to put the game away.
The Vaqueros continue their seven-game road trip as they head to Corpus Christi to take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on December 1 at 7 p.m.
