Hines Reaches 1,000 Points Plateau as Men's Basketball Falls at Houston

HOUSTON – Senior Shaquille Hines became the 24th student-athlete in program history to score at least 1,000-career points as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the University of Houston Cougars 78-65 on Monday at Hofheinz Pavilion.

In his 100th career game, Hines finished with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc, to increase his career total to 1,013, eight behind Steve Heard (1957-61) for 23rd place in program history. Hines also grabbed four rebounds to move within eight of 500 for his career.

Freshman Antonio Green also reached double-figures, scoring 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-8 from behind the arc, with five rebounds.

Devonta Pollard led the Cougars (4-0) with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Rob Gray Jr. scored 15 points. Damyean Dotson scored 11 points with 10 rebounds. Ronnie Johnson scored 11 points with four rebounds and three assists.

Johnson hit a layup and a three as the Cougars jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Vaqueros (2-4) came back to tie the game at 9 on a Hines layup before taking their first lead at 14-13 on a Hines three-pointer.

The Cougars responded with a 12-2 run to go up 25-16, but a Green three brought the Vaqueros within two possessions, and a three-point play by sophomore Dan Kimasa brought the Vaqueros within 27-25. The Cougars scored the next five points, but a layup and a three-pointer by Hines helped the Vaqueros tie the game at 34.

Early in the second half, the Vaqueros were down 41-39, but a jumper and a three by Green powered a 6-0 run to give the Vaqueros the lead. A Johnson three, a Pollard layup and a Gray three, however, put the Cougars back on top 49-45.

The Vaqueros regained the lead midway through the half when a Hines layup made it 54-53, but the Cougars scored the next eight points as part of a 16-2 run to push the game out of reach.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they visit Lamar in a game can that can be seen live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel Alternate (channel 825).
