EDINBURG – In the final home match in the careers of seniors Haley Durham and San Benito alum Kasey Sanchez, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros volleyball team swept the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-16) on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Bojana Mitrovic led the Vaqueros (11-16, 4-8 WAC) with 14 kills on .464 hitting and two aces. Durham had 12 kills on .292 hitting with four digs and two blocks. Junior Alisha Watson had six kills on .625 hitting with two aces. Freshman Alexandra Ecker had five kills on .625 hitting with a career-high five blocks. Freshman Dubravka Vukoja dished out 26 assists with a career-high tying four blocks.

Luiza Martins led the Roadrunners (10-14, 8-4 WAC) with eight kills and seven digs.

The Vaqueros hit a season-high .408 while holding the Roadrunners to .098 hitting.

The Vaqueros dominated the first set, out-hitting the Roadrunners .600 (13-1-20) to .071 (8-6-28). With the set tied at two, the Vaqueros took over the serve on an error, and then junior Fatoumata Dacosta served up an ace to kick off a 10-2 run that saw the Vaqueros go up 12-4. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 17-8 on a Mitrovic kill and 19-9 on a Watson ace before ending the set on back-to-back Durham kills and a block by junior Joanna Boronczyk.

The second set started in similar fashion, as the Vaqueros turned a 2-2 set into a 12-4 advantage thanks in part to a pair of blocks by Ecker and Vukoja to punctuate the run. The Roadrunners responded with a 10-4 run to pull within 14-16, but after a timeout, Mitrovic and Watson used back-to-back kills to spark a 9-3 run to end the set.

The Vaqueros led 5-1 out of the gate in the third set on the power of three Durham kills. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 8-3 and 10-4 on Mitrovic kills, and 13-6 on a Mitrovic ace. Later, with the Vaqueros' lead cut to 17-12, Mitorvic had two kills while Vukoja and Ecker combined on another block to push the set out of reach.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Thursday at 9 p.m. when they visit Utah Valley.
