CORPUS CHRISTI – Junior
Shawnte' Goff became the seventh player in program history to score at least 1,000 points in her career, but the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 49-46 on Tuesday at Dugan Wellness Center.
Goff finished with 11 points to increase her career total to 1,001 points. She reached 999 points by giving the Vaqueros (4-4) their first lead at 42-41 with 4:45 remaining in the fourth quarter. She passed the milestone with a layup that made it 48-46 in the final seconds.
Senior
Rickell Preston led the Vaqueros with 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting, 10 rebounds (six offensive) and two steals. Junior
Mary Savoy scored 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds.
Camesha Davis led the Islanders (3-2) with 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Brittany Mbamalu hit back-to-back threes as the Islanders jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the first three minutes of the game. Savoy and sophomore
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir responded with layups to get the Vaqueros on the board.
Davis answered with a pair of layups as part of a 6-0 run to push the Islanders' lead to 12, and then a Mbamalu three gave the Islanders their largest lead at 19-6 in the final minute of the quarter.
Savoy hit a pair of layups as the Vaqueros scored the next six points to pull within seven.
The Islanders extended their lead to 30-18 on a
Kassie Jones jumper with 1:58 remaining in the second quarter, but Preston ended the quarter with a pair of layups to kick of a 12-1 run as the Vaqueros pulled within 31-30 on a jumper by Goff at the 4:02 mark of the third.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Thursday at 6 p.m. when they visit Incarnate Word.
