LOGAN, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball fell to the North Dakota State University Bison 68-50 in the second day of the Global Sports Hoops Showcase at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The Vaqueros (3-9) had three players in double-figures as graduate student
J.J. Thompson, sophomore
Dan Kimasa and freshman
Antonio Green scored 12 points each. Kimasa finished a rebound short of a double-double after grabbing nine rebounds while Thompson dished out six assists.
The Bison's (9-3) also had three players in double figures as
Dexter Werner and
Paul Miller scored 16 points apiece with
A.J. Jacobson adding 15 points.
Thompson came out shooting as he scored the first five points for the Vaqueros as they took a 5-2 lead early in the first half. Green later hit a three-pointer to extend UTRGV's lead to 12-7 and then hit back-to-back buckets to make it 17-11 with 13:42 left in the half.
The Bison went on a 5-0 to get within one but senior
Shaquille Hines and Kimasa scored on back-to-back buckets to extend the Vaqueros' lead to 21-16. North Dakota State answered with 16-7 run to close out the half to take a 32-28 lead.
The Bison picked up where they left off as they started the second half on a 6-0 run that was stopped by Green's jumper that made it 38-30 in favor of North Dakota State with 16:36 left to play.
North Dakota pushed their lead to 51-34 after a layup by Werner capped a13-4 run. Thompson got the Vaqueros within 10 after converting a three-point play that made it 56-46 with 6:33 left in the game but that would be as close as they got as the Bison put the game away.
The Vaqueros close out tournament play on Wednesday when they face Idaho State on Wednesday with the tip off scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
