Men's Basketball Falls at UTEP

EL PASO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the UTEP Miners 85-64 on Tuesday at the Don Haskins Center.
 
Senior Shaquille Hines led the Vaqueros (3-11) with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting and five rebounds. Senior Everett Osborne scored a season-high 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Graduate student Dakota Slaughter scored 10 points with four rebounds and three assists.
 
Dominic Artis led the Miners (8-5) with 21 points while going 7-for-10 from behind the arc with eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Terry Winn scored 18 points with seven rebounds. Hooper Vint scored 12 points with 11 rebounds. Earvin Moore scored 10 points with five rebounds and three assists.
 
The Vaqueros' first five baskets were all three-pointers, as back-to-back threes by freshman Antonio Green and graduate student J.J. Thompson made it 6-3. Then, after Lee Moore hit a pair of baskets to cap a 9-0 Miners run, Osborne and and Slaughter hit back-to-back threes to tie the game at 12. Sophomore Ot Elmore made a three with 11:09 remaining to bring the Vaqueros within 18-15.
 
The Vaqueros tied the game again at 21 on a jumper by sophomore Adonis Rwabigwi, and then took the lead at 27-25 on a Slaughter three, but Artis hit back-to-back three-pointers and four in a span of two minutes to power an 18-6 run that gave the Miners a 43-33 lead in the final seconds of the half.
 
The Vaqueros pulled within 43-37 on an Osborne jumper at the start of the second half, but two more Artis three-pointers powered a 14-4 run to make it 57-41.
 
The Vaqueros came back to within 68-59 on a pair of Hines free throws with four and a half minutes left, but that's as close as they got.
 
The Vaqueros return home on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they play host to Our Lady of the Lake at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in a game can that can be seen live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (channel 323). Doors open at 6.
