Box ScoreMANHATTAN, Kan. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's basketball team closed out their seven-game road trip with a 61-43 loss to the Kansas State University Wildcats on Monday at Bramlage Coliseum.
Junior
Anushka Maldonado led the Vaqueros (5-6) with a career-high 14 points after knocking down a career-high four three-pointers. Junior
Shawnte' Goff scored nine points with four assists.
The Wildcats (7-1) got a game-high 15 points from
Breanna Lewis while also adding nine rebounds.
Kaylee Page recorded a double-double with13 points and 12 rebounds and Megan Deines chipped in 12 points and four rebounds.
The Vaqueros jumped out to an early lead after getting back-to-back three point shots from freshman
Bernesha Peters and Goff that made it 8-3. After a jumper from junior
Mary Savoy, the Wildcats answered with a 15-2 run to close out the quarter as they led 18-10.
In the second quarter, the Vaqueros and Wildcats each knocked down a pair of buckets but it was Maldonado who hit back-to-back three pointers to get the Vaqueros within two at 22-20 with 1:16 left in the half.
Jessica Shelbe hit a layup to close out the scoring in the quarter as the Wildcats took the 24-20 half time lead.
Goff opened the second half with a three-pointer that got the Vaqueros within one point at 24-23. The Wildcats then went on an 8-2 run that was stopped by a Savoy layup with 5:05 left in the third that made it 32-27. The Vaqueros were outscored 21 to 9 in the third as the Wildcats closed it on an 11-0 run to push their lead to 45-29.
In the fourth quarter, Goff hit a three-pointer and then a free throw by sophomore
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir cut the Wildcats lead at 47-37 but the Wildcats extended their lead back to 57-37 after going on a 10-0 run to put the game away.
The Vaqueros are back in action when they return home to host the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6 p.m. The game will be televised live throughout the state on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel Alt., channel 825.
