Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Bakersfield Roadrunners 66-54 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Janari Joesaar led the Broncs (8-17, 2-7 WAC) with 18 points. Senior
Shaquille Boga scored 15 points with six assists.
Kevin Mays led the Roadrunners (10-15, 5-4 WAC) 14 points with 10 rebounds.
Aly Ahmed scored 13 points with seven rebounds.
Brent Wrapp scored 13 points with seven assists.
Jaylin Airington scored 10 points with six rebounds.
Junior
Shaquille Hines and Boga hit a pair of early as baskets as the Broncs jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Roadrunners, however, hit five of their next six shots, including a pair of threes by Airington, and one by
Javonte Maynor to score 15-straight points and go up 17-4 in the opening seven and a half minutes.
Joesaar and junior
Everett Osborne followed with a pair of jumpers, but the Roadrunners scored eight of the next nine points to build their largest lead of the half at 25-9.
Boga responded with a pair of jumpers to bookend the first of two 6-0 runs as the Broncs scored 12 of the next 16 points to pull within 29-21 with 1:04 remaining in the first half.
The Roadrunners pushed their lead back out to 11 early in the second half, but Osborne and Boga nailed threes to power a 7-2 run that saw the Broncs pull within 37-31 at the 13:45 mark. The Roadrunners responded with a 7-0 to push their lead back into double-figures, where it remained for the rest of the game.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they play host to Seattle U at the UTPA Fieldhouse. In honor of Valentine's Day, there will be a buy one, get one free promotion. Additionally, one lucky couple will win a basket of sweets, courtesy of Corner Bakery Cafe. Doors open at 6.
