Women's Basketball Ties Program Wins Record by Completing Regular Season Sweep of Seattle U

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team tied the program wins record with 14 by completing the regular season sweep of the Seattle U Redhawks with a 70-60 victory on Saturday at Connolly Center.

This is the fourth time in program history and second year in a row that the Broncs have won 14 games.

Additionally, the Broncs (14-11) are now 7-3 in Western Athletic Conference play, leaving them one win away from tying the program record for conference wins in a season. Three of this season's conference wins have come on the road, tying the program record.

The Broncs can clinch the winningest season in program history when they host NJIT for Broncs Against Breast Cancer on Monday at 7 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The Broncs will also have a chance to break the program record for home wins in a season (10).

Due to New Mexico State's (9-1 WAC) 82-78 loss at Bakersfield (7-3 WAC), the Broncs pull within two games of the Aggies while remaining tied with the Roadrunners for second place.

Sophomore Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs with 16 points. Senior Tonisha Walker scored 13 points while hitting a trio of three-pointers. Freshman Troi Swain scored a career-high tying 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc, with two steals.

Taelor Ross led the Redhawks (7-18, 4-6 WAC) with 14 points. Kaylee Best scored 11 points with seven assists.

The game was tight for most of the first half. The Broncs trailed 16-10 with about eight and a half minutes left when Swain buried a three to make it a one-possession game.

The Redhawks pushed their lead back out to five at 20-15, but a pair of free throws by senior T'Ondria Nolen and a three by Walker allowed the Broncs to tie the game with four minutes to go. The Redhawks, however, scored the next nine points to go up 29-20.

The Redhawks went up as many as 11 at 42-31 with 14:31 remaining, but a Walker jumper on the ensuing possession sparked a 22-8 run as the Broncs went up 63-50 on a pair of free throws by senior Cha'zaye Wright with 3:17 left.

In the middle of the run, the Broncs took a 49-48 on a layup by freshman Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir and never trailed again.
