Box ScoreEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 75-63 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs (15-12, 7-4 WAC) with 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, plus 6-for-8 from the line. Freshman
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir scored 11 points with 10 rebounds for her first-career double-double. Senior
Brittany Bush scored 10 points with 10 rebounds for her third double-double.
August Touchard led the Antelopes (11-12, 5-5 WAC) with 27 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, plus 7-of-8 from the line.
Casey Rarrick scored 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc, plus 5-of-5 from the line.
Goff hit a jumper in the opening minute, but a Rarrick layup sparked a 7-0 run as the 'Lopes went up 7-2.
The 'Lopes lead was 11-7 when Kjartansdóttir made a layup and Goff nailed back-to-back threes to spark a 14-2 run that saw the Broncs go up 21-13.
Touchard responded almost by herself, scoring 10 points during a 12-0 run to put the 'Lopes up 25-21 with 3:35 remaining in the first half.
The Broncs tied the game on a jumper by senior
Cherrell Price and a pair of free throws by senior
Tonisha Walker, but the 'Lopes closed the half on a 10-3 run to go up 35-28.
Astrea Reed opened the half with a jumper, and then, after senior
T'Ondria Nolen did the same, Reed knocked down a three to give the 'Lopes a 40-30 lead.
The 'Lopes pushed their lead out to 11 on two occasions, including 49-38 on another Reed jumper with 15:29 remaining, but Goff hit a three and a layup to power a 9-0 run as the Broncs pulled within 49-47 three and a half minutes later.
Touchard, however, was fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer and hit all three shots, and then Rarrick hit a pair of threes as the 'Lopes went on a 13-5 run to push the game out of reach.
The Broncs play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host Utah Valley for senior day. Doors open at 1.
