Logan Landon was involved in all of the scoring, including a go-ahead home run in the sixth, to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team to a 3-1 victory over the Abilene Christian University Wildcats in the home opener, which was also the opening game of the Al Ogletree Classic, on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
With the Broncs (3-2) down 1-0 in the third, Landon hit a leadoff triple against
Aaron Mason before scoring on a single by junior
Tony Roque to tie the game.
Then, with two outs in the sixth, after junior
Correy Davis was plunked by
Thomas Altimont (0-2), Landon got a hanging curve ball and hit a laser line drive into the left field bullpen to give the Broncs the lead. It was Landon's first-career home run.
Senior
Blake English (1-1) made the runs stand up, racking up a career-high nine strikeouts while scattering five hits and two walks in eight innings.
Sophomore Nikki Rowe alum
Andrew Padron struck out the side in a scoreless ninth for his first save.
The Wildcats (0-4) scored their lone run in the first, putting runners at second and third with one out to set up a sacrifice fly by
Russell Crippen.
The Broncs and Wildcats play game two of this three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5.
