Cherrell Price hit a buzzer beating layup to send the Broncs to a 57-55 victory over the Utah Valley University Wolverines on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Broncs (16-12, 8-4 WAC) tie the program record for conference wins in a season for the second year in a row and are now assured of either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the Western Athletics Conference Tournament.
The Broncs finish the regular season a program record 12-3 at home.
Price scored the Broncs' final 10 points over the last nine minutes, first hitting a layup to put the Broncs up 49-45. Then, after the Wolverines tied it, Price hit a pair of free throws to put the Broncs up 51-49. After a
Rhaiah Spooner-Knight basket tied the game, Price hit one free throw to give the Broncs the lead, but
Georgia Agnew responded with a layup. Price then converted a three-point play to put the Broncs up 55-53, but
Karlee Norris hit a layup with six seconds left to set-up Price's game-winner.
Price led the Broncs with a career-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 1-of-3 from behind the arc, plus 5-of-7 from the line, with three rebounds in 21 minutes. Senior
Brittany Bush also reached double-figures, scoring 10 points with four rebounds and two blocks.
Mariah Seals led the Wolverines (9-17, 3-8 WAC) with 16 points while Spooner-Knight scored 12 points with eight rebounds.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 6-2 lead over the first four minutes, but seniors
Tonisha Walker and
T'Ondria Nolen hit back-to-back three to spark a 13-2 run as the Broncs went up 15-8 with 10:27 remaining in the first half.
The Wolverines pulled within two when Seals hit a layup and a three-pointer, but Bush hit back-to-back baskets to put the Broncs up 23-17.
The Wolverines, however, responded with a 14-4 run, with seven points coming from Seals, to take a 31-27 lead.
Freshman
Troi Swain hit a pair of free throws at the end of the first half and then Walker stared the second half with a three and a jumper to put the Broncs back on top at 34-31.
The Broncs hit the road for their final two contests before the WAC Tournament, starting Saturday at 8 p.m. against WAC-leading New Mexico State.
