Blake English recorded his fifth complete game of his career to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs past the Arlington Baptist Patriots 12-1 Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The game ended after six and a half innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
English (2-1) pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out six. It was his first complete game of the season.
The Broncs (9-5) got on the board in the bottom of the second when
Victor Garcia Jr. led off the inning with a solo homerun, his second of the season, that made it 1-0.
After a walk to
Logan Landon in the bottom of the third that loaded the bases, an error allowed
Isaac Gonzalez to come in and score the second run of the game. Garcia Jr. followed with a two-run double to deep center field that drove in
Manny Laredo and Landon from second and third.
Jesus Garcia followed with an RBI single to left center that made it 5-0 in favor of the Broncs.
The Patriots (9-13) got their lone run in the top of the fourth after a fielding error allowed Ryan Wagley to score but
Jacob Huckabay added two more runs for the Broncs in the bottom fourth inning with a two-run single pushing the lead to 7-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Garcia and
Scott Mercer reached on back-to-back singles and then Garcia came in to score on a sacrifice fly by
Correy Davis.
Cole Loncar followed with an RBI single that allowed Mercer to score from second. One out later, Landon extended his hit streak to 11 games with a three-run home run to close out the scoring.
Austin Valdez took the loss after pitching four and a third innings and allowing 10 runs on seven hits while walking eight.
The Broncs and the Patriots play game two of their three-game Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch slated for 6:05 p.m.
