Logan Landon moved into a tie for fourth place in the NCAA in hitting, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the No. 1 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs 5-0 on Tuesday at Lupton Field.
Landon, who has reached base in all 17 games this season, went 2-for-4 with a double to raise his batting average to .475. He is now riding a 14-game hitting streak, during which time he is 27-for-51 (.529) with 10 multi-hit games.
Junior Broncs (10-7) starter
Parker Gallegos (1-2) put together a quality start giving up three runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four in six innings.
The Horned Frogs (15-2) got on the board against Gallegos in the first. With runners on the corners and two outs,
Garrett Crain hit an RBI-single to make it 1-0.
Gallegos settled down from there, allowing just two more hits over the next five innings.
In the seventh, however,
Cody Jones doubled down the left field line and
Connor Wanhanen pushed a bunt down the third base line for a single, knocking out Gallegos.
Freshman
Johnny Gonzalez came in out of the bullpen and got
Derek Odell to hit a liner to left, but the ball hit off the front of Landon's glove as he slid for the ball, rolling to the wall for an RBI-double. One out later, Crain hit a one-hopper to second to drive-in Wanhanen and make it 3-0.
The Horned Frogs added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI-groundout by Wanhanen and an RBI-infield single by Odell.
Brian Howard (3-0) kept the Broncs off the board for the first four innings, striking out four while allowing two hits.
Ryan Burnett took over in the fifth, and after allowing runners to reach the corners with one out, got freshman
Isaac Gonzalez to foul out and junior
Cole Loncar to groundout.
The Broncs threatened again in the sixth, putting runners at first and second with two outs, but
Trey Teakell came it and got junior
Jesus Garcia to groundout to end the threat.
The Broncs and Horned Frogs complete this two-game set on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
