Box ScoreSACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State University Hornets scored three runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to rally past the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team 7-4 on Saturday at John Smith Field.
The Broncs (10-10, 0-2 WAC) led 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh.
Vinny Esposito hit a leadoff double, and then, with one out,
Kyle Moses singled,
Scotty Burcham hit a two-run triple, and
Nathan Lukes hit into an RBI-fielder's choice to put the Hornets (12-9, 2-0 WAC) up 4-3.
That was all against freshman
Robert Quinonez who went 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five.
The Broncs tied the game in the top of the eighth when senior
Logan Landon launched his fourth home run of the season, tied for the WAC lead, but Moses hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning against freshman
Johnny Gonzalez (1-1) to complete the scoring.
Moses finished 3-for-5 while Burchman went 2-for-3 with two walks.
That made a winner of
Grant Kukuk (2-2), who got junior
Scott Mercer to groundout with runners on the corners and two outs in the eighth.
Ryan Smith worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his third save.
Landon finished 2-for-3 with a walk to raise his WAC-leading average to .457. Senior
Jesus Garcia went a season-best 3-for-4 with a triple while junior
Correy Davis went 2-for-4.
Sam Long started for the Hornets, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four in seven innings.
The Broncs got their first run against Long in the fifth, on an RBI-single by freshman
Isaac Gonzalez. Junior
Cole Loncar followed with a two-run home run, his first of the season, to put the Broncs up 3-1.
The Hornets only scored once over the first six innings against Quinonez, on an Esposito sacrifice fly in the second.
The Broncs and Hornets complete three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
