Men's Tennis Falls to No. 8 Texas

Box Score

AUSTIN – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team fell to the No 8 University of Texas Longhorns 2-5 on Sunday at Westwood Country Club, in their first match of the day.

"What an effort by our Broncs against the No. 8 team in the country," Broncs head coach Brandon Stokes said. "We played at Westwood Country Club with a crowd over 100 Longhorn fans. I believe we converted a handful of them due to our energy, spirit and fight."

The Broncs (3-9) opened doubles with a loss on court two but they battled back on court one against a tough opponent. The team of Juan Cruz Soria and Koby Jansen defeated the 35th ranked doubles team of Soren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool 7-5 at No. 1 doubles before the Longhorns (14-2) took the match on court three to clinch the point.

"We started strong in doubles but we came up short on court three," Stokes said. "We know it is only one point so we dug in for singles. We had leads and set points on several courts but Texas made the plays."

In singles, the Longhorns opened with wins on courts four and five before Elliot Johnstone picked up a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over William Jou at No. 6 singles. Texas followed with a win at No. 1 singles but the Broncs answered with a win No. 2 singles as Hector Ramirez defeated Nick Naumann 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7. Jansen opened with a 7-6 (2) loss in his first set against John Mee at No. 3 singles. He bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second set before falling 10-6 in the tiebreaker to close out the match.

"Elliot is a gamer," Stokes said. "Hector is a big time grinder. Koby left the court with all he had to give. Juan is so close to a breakthrough moment in singles because of what happened in doubles today. We are back on court again today for another tough in-state match up."

The Broncs face off against No. 22 St. Edwards today at 4:30 p.m. at the Strohmeyer Varsity Tennis Courts
