EDINBURG – Down six entering the bottom of the ninth, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team brought the tying run to the plate before falling 9-6 to the Seattle University Redhawks in its Western Athletic Conference home opener on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
 
The Broncs (11-12, 0-4 WAC) outhit the Redhawks (10-14, 3-1 WAC) 16-to-7, led by junior Correy Davis, who went 4-for-4 with a walk, a double, a triple and an RBI. Davis is now 11-for-16 (.688) over the last four games.
 
Four other Broncs had multi-hit games, including senior Jesus Garcia, who went 3-for-4, and senior Logan Landon, who went 3-for-5. Junior Cole Loncar and sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. had two hits each. Landon's batting average, ranked second in the NCAA entering play, now stands at .476.
 
The Broncs trailed 9-3 with the bases clean and two outs in the bottom of the ninth when Landon beat out a grounder, freshman Edinburg alum Michael Harrison was plunked and Victor Garcia singled to load the bases. Junior Scott Mercer followed with a two-run single and Davis hit an RBI-single to bring the tying run to the plate, but junior Sharyland alum Alexis Hernandez hit a grounder to short to end the game.
 
Landon had both of the Broncs' RBI through the first eight innings, driving in the game's first run with a fielder's choice in the third and the Broncs' final run with a single in the seventh.
 
After Landon drove in the Broncs' first run, the bases were loaded and sophomore Jacob Huckabay grounded into a double play, scoring the runner at third.
 
That was it against Will Dennis (4-2), who pitched seven innings, allowing 10 hits and one walk while striking out five.
 
Senior Blake English (2-3) sailed through the first three innings, facing the minimum. The only base runner reached on an error and then was immediately erased by a double play. Mercer made a pair of diving plays at third, one on a grounder to his right and one to catch a liner to his left, to prevent hits in the first.
 
In the fourth, however, Landon Cray drew a leadoff walk and stole second before scoring on an RBI-single by Griffin Andreychuck. Then, with two on and two out, an error allowed two more runs to score.
 
The Redhawks added a run in the fifth when Sheldon Stober reached on a fielder's choice, and two in the sixth on a two-run single by Colin Peterson.
 
That was it against English, who allowed six runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out two in six innings.
 
The Redhawks added three runs in the eighth on an error, a sacrifice fly by Cray and an RBI-single by Andreychuck.
 
The Broncs and Redhawks play the middle game of this three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5.
