Baseball Rallies in the Ninth Before Falling to Incarnate Word in Extra Innings

Box Score

EDINBURG – Senior Logan Landon hit a game-tying triple with two outs in the ninth, but the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals scored four runs in the 11th to beat the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team 7-3 on Tuesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Broncs (11-15) trailed 3-1 with one out in the bottom of the ninth when junior Cole Loncar beat out a grounder to short. Then, with two outs, junior Correy Davis singled, setting up Landon's game-tying triple off the top of the left-center field wall. Sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. followed with a line drive to right-center, but Mark Whitehead made a full-frontal diving catch to force extra innings.

After working a perfect ninth, sophomore Nikki Rowe alum Andrew Padron (1-2) worked around a one-out single in the 10th. In the 11th, however, the Cardinals (11-16) loaded the bases on a single and two hit batsmen. Tanner Wall followed with a two-run single, and then, after a sacrifice bunt, Blake Woosley hit a two-run single of his own.

That made a winner of Matthew Decker (1-0), who pitched two innings, allowing one hit and one hit batsman.

The Broncs got their first run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Garcia. That scored Davis, who went 3-for-6 and is now 15 for his last 25 (.600). Loncar also reached multiple times, going 3-for-5 with a double and a walk.

Cardinals starter Kris Looper went the first six innings, allowing one run on six hits and four walks while striking out one.

All of the Cardinals runs came against junior Parker Gallegos in the second. Austin Hoffman led off with his second home run of the season. After a double and an error, Wall and Colton Besett hit back-to-back RBI-singles to make it 3-0.

The Cardinals threatened again in the fourth, putting two on with two out, but freshman Johnny Gonzalez came in and pitched 2.1 perfect innings to halt the Cardinals offense. Freshman Robert Quinonez and junior Matt Rigby each followed with a hitless inning.

The Broncs are back in action on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. when they play the opening game of a three-game series at Grand Canyon.
