Women's Basketball Clinches First Winning Season at NCAA Division I Level

Box Score

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Freshman Troi Swain hit a jumper to force overtime, and then nailed a go-ahead three-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in double-overtime as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team clinched its first winning season at the NCAA Division I level with an 84-82 victory over the Kansas City Kangaroos on Saturday at Swinney Recreation Center.

The Broncs (17-13, 9-5 WAC) are in their 30th season at the NCAA Division I level. The last time the Broncs had a winning season was 1982-83, when they went 10-5 at the NAIA Division II level.

Already in the midst of the winningest season in program history, the win also allowed the Broncs to break the program records for conference wins in a season, now with nine, and conference road wins in a season, now with four.

Swain finished with eight points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs with 18 points and five assists. Senior Tonisha Walker scored 13 points. Senior Brittany Bush scored 12 points with five rebounds.

Calli White led the Kangaroos (6-23, 4-10 WAC) with 24 points while hitting four three-pointers to go with four assists. Kiana Law scored 19 points with 12 rebounds. Aries Washington scored 11 points with eight rebounds. Samantha Waldron scored 10 points.

The Kangaroos led for most of the first 29 minutes of regulation, but the Broncs tied the game at 48 on a three by freshman Stephanie Onyeje before taking their first lead on a jumper by Swain with 10:22 remaining.

The game became a back-and-forth affair from there. The Broncs trailed 67-65 with nine seconds left, but Swain hit her jumper with 2.2 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

The Broncs only trailed for 17 seconds in the first overtime, going up 76-74 on a Goff free throw with 15 seconds left, but Waldron made a jumper before time expired to force a second overtime.

The Broncs went up 79-76 on a Goff three in the opening minute of the second overtime, but a pair of Grace Mitchell free throws and a Taylor Leathers jumper allowed the 'Roos to go up by one with two minutes left.

The Broncs took the lead back on a Goff jumper with 54 seconds left, but Leathers made a layup with 32 seconds to go to put the 'Roos up 82-81 and set-up Swain's game-winning shot.

The third-seeded Broncs and sixth-seeded Kangaroos have an immediate rematch, as they faceoff in the WAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Wednesday at 9 p.m. CDT at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
