Box ScoreEDINBURG – Down 5-0 after seven and a half innings, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team rallied to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth before falling to the Chicago State University Cougars 5-3 on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Jake Perkins (1-3) held the Broncs (13-23, 1-13 WAC) to four singles, two of which didn't leave the infield, over the first 7.1 innings. With one out in the eighth, however, junior
Cole Loncar drew an eight-pitch walk, and then junior
Scott Mercer doubled to put runners in scoring position. Senior
Logan Landon followed with an RBI-single. He then stole second. One out later, senior
Jesus Garcia hit a two-run single to make it 5-3.
Nick Kostalek took over in the ninth, and sophomore
Victor Garcia Jr. and freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo greeted him with singles, but they were the Broncs' last base runners as Kostalek picked up his third save.
The Cougars (8-28, 2-11 WAC) broke through against freshman
Robert Quinonez (2-4) in the third on RBI-doubles by
Jared Patterson and
Andy Gertonson that made it 2-0.
Quinonez responded by retiring 10 of the next 12 batters he faced. In the seventh, however, a pair of leadoff singles knocked out Quinonez. Junior
Parker Gallegos came in and got a fly out, but a wild pitch scored a run, and then, after a pair of walks,
Chase Matheson hit a two-run single to make it 5-0.
