Baseball Plays Chicago State to 11-Inning Tie

Box Score

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team and Chicago State University Cougars played to a 7-7, 11-inning tie on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The game ended at 3:43 p.m. to give the Cougars (8-28-1, 2-11-1 WAC) enough time to reach the airport and catch their flight back to Chicago.

It is the third tie in program history and the first at home. The Broncs' (13-23-1, 1-13-1 WAC) last tie was on March 18, 2000, 8-8 at Centenary College.

It is the second tie in 19 seasons for Broncs head coach Manny Mantrana, who also had a tie while with Saint Thomas University in 2007.

It is the second tie in the WAC this season.

Junior Cole Loncar led the Broncs by reaching base all six times he went to the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, two walks and a hit by pitch. He scored a career-high three runs while driving in a pair.

The Cougars led 1-0 out of the gate after Mattingly Romanin hit a solo home run against senior Blake English.

In the bottom of the first, however, junior Correy Davis hit a game-tying single against Tyler Abbott, and then the Broncs took the lead on an error.

The Cougars tied the game right away on an RBI-double by Cody Freund, but the Broncs took the lead back in the third on a suicide squeeze by sophomore Jacob Huckabay.

The Broncs added on to their lead on a two-run single by junior Cole Loncar in the fourth, but the Cougars got those runs right back on a two-run home run by Andy Gertonson in the fifth.

That's where the score stayed until the eighth, when the Cougars pushed across a pair of unearned runs against sophomore Nikki Rowe alum Andrew Padron.

The Broncs tied it in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-triple by senior Logan Landon, but the Cougars took the lead back in the top of the ninth on an RBI-single by Matt Schmidt.

In the ninth, senior Jesus Garcia tied the game with a one-out double off of Nick Kostalek.

Padron retired all six hitters he faced in extra innings.

The Broncs had an opportunity in the 11th, putting two on with two out, but sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. popped up to end the game.

The Broncs are back in action on Tuesday at 3 p.m. when they visit Prairie View A&M.
