Box ScorePHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 8-7 in the opening game of their three-game series on Thursday at Brazell Stadium.
The Antelopes (16-14) got on the board in the bottom of the second against Broncs' starter
Blake English.
Rouric Bridgewater hit a two-run double and
Humberto Aranda followed with an RBI single that made it 3-0. Grand Canyon added another run in the bottom of the third after
Paul Panaccione scored on a balk pushing their lead to 4-0.
The Broncs (11-16) rallied in the top of the fifth with seven runs of their own.
Scott Mercer delivered a two-run double that scored
Victor Garcia Jr. and
Edgar Cordon. A couple of batters later,
Jesus Garcia hit an RBI single to left that allowed
Jacob Huckabay to score. A fielding error later in the inning allowed
Cole Loncar and Mercer to score to give the Broncs the 5-4 lead.
The Broncs were not done in the inning as
Logan Landon delivered an RBI single that scored Garcia from third and then Garcia Jr. closed out the scoring in the inning with an RBI single that scored
Correy Davis pushing the Broncs' lead to 7-4.
The Antelopes answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, which tied the game at seven. The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when
Jon Kealoha hit an RBI double off of
Matt Rigby (2-2) that gave Grand Canyon the 8-7.
The Broncs loaded the bases in the top of the ninth but
Tra Garcia-Perreira recorded the final out to close out the ball game for his first save of the season.
Mick Vorhof picked up the win for Grand Canyon after pitching three and two-third innings of scoreless baseball while striking out five.
The Broncs and the Antelopes play the middle game of their three-game series on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
