Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team beat the University of Northern Colorado Bears 5-2 in the regularly scheduled game on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Junior
Correy Davis led the Broncs (15-24-1, 2-14-1 WAC) offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. It was his fifth game of at least three hits this season.
The Broncs are averaging 7.7 runs per game over their last six games.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the Broncs pounced on
Alex Werbach (2-5), knocking him out after just two-thirds of an inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Davis hit an RBI-single to tie the game. One out later, sophomore
Victor Garcia Jr. hit a two-run single. One batter after that, freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo hit an RBI-single to make it 4-1.
That was it for the Broncs until the seventh, when junior
Cole Loncar came up with a two-out RBI-triple to make it 5-2.
That made a winner of freshman
Ryan Jackson (2-4), who pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Junior
Matt Rigby followed with 1.2 inning of scoreless relief before freshman
Johnny Gonzalez got the final two outs for his first save.
The Bears (14-22, 10-7 WAC) got their runs against freshman
Robert Quinonez over the first two innings, on an infield-RBI single by
Marco Castilla in the first and an RBI-groundout by
Jack Ek in the second.
Quinonez went four innings, striking out four while allowing three hits and two walks.
The Broncs and Bears complete this three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. Any fan bringing four non-perishable food items to the game will receive a free ticket as part of the Strike Out Hunger Promotion. All donations benefit the Food Bank RGV. There is no limit on how many tickets can be redeemed. Gates open at 11 a.m.
