Clayton Haltom and
Alex Henson combined to pitch eight shutout innings to lead the Broncs baseball team past the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 2-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Chapman Field.
Haltom (1-0) earned his first-career win by pitching the first five innings, scattering five singles and two walks while striking out two and inducing a pair of double plays to escape jams in the fourth and fifth innings.
Henson retired the first seven batters he faced while pitching three scoreless innings.
Haltom and Henson had success by throwing strikes, as 76 of their 127 pitches (59.8 percent) were in the zone, and keeping the ball down, recording 13 groundouts compared to six fly outs and three strikeouts.
In the ninth, junior
Matt Rigby allowed a leadoff home run to
Zacarias Hardy before retiring the next three hitters for his first-career save.
The Broncs (16-25-1) got their runs against Islanders (20-20) starter
Dalton D'Spain (0-1) in the second on an RBI-single by freshman Edinburg alum
Michael Harrison and a suicide squeeze by freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo. It was Harrison's first-career RBI.
D'Spain went six innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out four.
The Broncs and Islanders play the second game of this doubleheader in approximately 30 minutes.
