PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team dropped the middle game of their three-game series to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 9-3 on Friday at Brazell Stadium.
The Broncs (11-17) got on the board in the top of the first against Antelopes' starter
Coley Bruns as
Victor Garcia Jr. hit a solo home run, his third of the season, to give the Broncs the 1-0 lead. Garcia Jr. finished 2-for-4 to pace the Broncs as he recorded his 11
th multi-hit game of the season.
The Antelopes (17-14) answered in the bottom half of the first with an RBI single from
Chad De La Guerra that allowed
David Walker to score tying the game at one.
In the bottom of the second,
Paul Panaccione hit a two-run single that drove in
Thomas Lerouge and
Ben Mauseth. Walker came in to score another run in the inning on a wild pitch that pushed their lead to 4-1.
The Antelopes added five more runs in the bottom of the third inning against
Robert Quinonez (2-2), who took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits.
Logan Landon added another run for the Broncs in the top of the third inning with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, which made the score 9-2 in favor of Grand Canyon.
Cole Loncar made it 9-3 in the top of the eighth with an RBI single that scored
Scott Mercer, who led off the inning with a double.
Clayton Haltom and
Zach Martinez combined to keep the Antelopes off the scoreboard in five and a third innings of relief.
Bruns (5-1) earned the win for Grand Canyon after pitching eight innings and allowing three runs on six hits and striking out nine.
The Broncs and the Antelopes wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
