Redshirt junior Sharyland alum
Alexis Hernandez and led the Broncs (12-19) by going 4-for-4 with an RBI while finishing the doubleheader 5-for-7. Junior
Scott Mercer went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Senior
Logan Landon went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored to finish the doubleheader 5-for-7 with a home run and three doubles.
The Broncs trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the second, but put runners at second and third with one out to set up a game-tying suicide squeeze by redshirt sophomore
Jacob Huckabay. Mercer followed with an RBI-double and then later scored on an errant pickoff throw.
The Islanders (14-15) took the lead back in the next inning on a bases clearing double by
Cody Clarke, but the Broncs scored single runs in each of the next two innings to go up 5-4. Junior
Cole Loncar had an RBI-single in the fourth while redshirt sophomore Edinburg alum
Edgar Cordon had a pinch-hit RBI-single in the fifth.
The Islanders took the lead for good in the sixth by scoring five unearned runs off of freshman
Robert Quinonez (2-3), and then, after Loncar came up with another RBI-single to make it a three-run game, the Islanders scored four more runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to push the game out of reach.
That made a winner of
Trevor Belicek (5-2), who pitched 1.1 innings of relief, allowing a run on two hits while striking out one.
The Broncs completed the scoring when Hernandez hit an RBI-single in the eighth.
The Broncs are back in action on Friday at 8 p.m. when they open up a three-game series at Bakersfield.
