CHICAGO – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team continues conference play as they face the Chicago State University Cougars on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Chicago State Tennis Courts.
This is the second Western Athletic Conference Cluster of the season. The Broncs are 2-1 in conference play and the conference standings will determine the seeding for the WAC Tournament, which begins on April 24 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Last Time OutThe Broncs went toe-to-toe with the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners but fell 2-5 in their final home match of the season.
The Roadrunners (13-7) jumped out in front as they clinched the doubles point with wins on court two and three. The match on court one was tied at five before it went unfinished once the doubles point was clinched.
The Broncs (7-11) responded with wins on courts four and five to grab the 2-1 lead.
Elliot Johnstone got the Broncs on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Joel Rubio on court four and then
Ethan Ammon followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Joao Ruquelme on court five. The Roadrunners got the win on court six to tie the match at two as it came down to the final three courts.
Koby Jansen fell 1-6 in his opening set against Tito Moreiras. Jansen then battled back to win the second set 7-6 but fell 7-5 in the third giving the Roadrunners the advantage.
On court two,
Hector Ramirez opened with a 7-6 win in the first set against Yannick Junger but fell in the tiebreaker in the second set before falling 3-6 in the final set giving UTSA the match.
Juan Cruz Soria battled the No. 82 ranked singles player in Tomas Stillman on court one. Soria fell 6-7 in the first set but answered in the second with a 7-6 win. In the third set, Soria and Stillman went back and forth before Soria fell 3-6 to close out the matches.
WAC Athletes of the WeekFor the fourth time this season, a Bronc was named WAC Athlete of the Week.
Juan Cruz Soria earned his second honor of the season and the third of his career, on March 31, after going undefeated in singles play during the first WAC Cluster of the season.
Koby Jansen earned the honor on February 24, Soria was named athlete of the week on March 3 and
Hector Ramirez earned the honor on March 24.
Scouting the CougarsThe Cougars are 4-14 on the season and 0-1 in conference play as they head into the weekend.
Chicago State is coming off of a 2-5 loss to Grand Canyon in the first WAC Cluster of the season. They were scheduled to play Seattle U at the Orville Cox Tennis Center but Seattle U could not make the trip.
This season, the Cougars have recorded wins against Cardinal Stritch University, Western Illinois, St. Francis University and North Central.
The SeriesThis is the first meeting between the Broncs and the Cougars.
GlobetrottersThe Broncs have seven student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Mexico, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago.
Next UpThe Broncs close out conference play on Saturday at 8 a.m. when they face the Seattle University Redhawks at the Chicago State Tennis Courts.
