Box ScoreGRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the University North Dakota (UND) 5-3 on Friday at Kraft Memorial Field.
UND (17-21, 11-8 WAC) jumped on the board right away, as
Ryan Reese doubled down the right field line against junior
Parker Gallegos (2-4) to make it 2-0 one out into the first.
Reese added an RBI-single in the third to make it 3-0.
In the fourth,
Sam Alt opened the inning with an infield-single to knock out Gallegos. Freshman Harlingen South alum
Zach Martinez allowed Alt to score on a two-out infield-single by
Dalton Parrott before settling down to toss five innings of one-run ball, striking out four.
The remaining run came on a Reese sacrifice fly in the seventh. He finished 2-for-3 with four RBI.
That was enough run support for
Andrew Thome (3-6), who didn't allow a hit to the Broncs (17-26-1, 2-16-1 WAC) until sophomore
Victor Garcia Jr. singled with one out in the fourth.
The Broncs broke through in the sixth, when, with the bases loaded and nobody out, junior
Correy Davis grounded into an RBI-fielder's choice, Garcia grounded out to force-in a run, and senior
Jesus Garcia hit an RBI-single to make it 4-3.
Thome ended up going the full nine innings, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out six.
The Broncs and UND play the middle game of this three-game series on Saturday at 3 p.m.
