UTPA Athletics Extends Alcohol Pilot Program to Remaining Baseball Games

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday that, due to the success of the initial four-game alcohol pilot program, it will extend the program to the remaining baseball home games Thursday at 7 p.m., Friday at 6 and Saturday at 12 at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

During the aforementioned games, UTPA's current licensed concessionaire, Sodexo Campus Dining Services (Sodexo Sports and Leisure), will administer the sale of beer and wine to ticketed patrons of the general public.

Alcohol sales will begin one hour prior to game time and conclude at the beginning of the seventh inning. Credit cards and cash will be accepted.

Sodexo requires a valid state-issued ID of any patron who appears to be under the age of 30. Sodexo will provide a trained staff member to check IDs upon entrance and provide designated wristbands for patrons who are over 21. Wristbands must be put on at the check-in table. UTPA Athletics will provide customized wristbands for each pilot program game. Current student-athletes are prohibited from drinking alcohol at UT System athletic venues, regardless of age.

There will be a designated family zone for ticket holders that wish to sit in an alcohol-free section of the stadium.

After the conclusion of the spring pilot program, UTPA Athletics, Sodexo, and the UTPA Police Department will evaluate incident reports, safety, atmosphere, fan input, and revenue generation. UTPA Athletics will then recommend the continuation, discontinuation or expansion of the public alcohol sales program at future events.
