Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – The of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 5-2 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Junior
Scott Mercer led the Broncs (20-30-1, 5-20-1 WAC) by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Mercer scored his run in the first. After reaching on an infield-single, Mercer stole second and scored on a two-out single by sophomore
Victor Garcia Jr. Then, with the Broncs down 4-1 in the fifth, Mercer doubled home senior
Clayton Haltom, who had doubled earlier in the inning, to make it a two-run game.
Senior
Blake English (2-5) retired the first six batters he faced on a strikeout, a fly out and four groundouts. In the third, however, the Wolverines (18-32, 14-12 WAC) put two on with one out, setting up an RBI-single by
Kade Andrus and a two-run single by
Mark Kreuger. The Wolverines added a run on an error later in the inning.
That made a winner of
Patrick Wolfe (2-5), who pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Kyle Valgardson pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save.
The Broncs bullpen held the Wolverines off the board until the ninth. Freshman Harlingen South alum
Zach Martinez pitched 4.2 innings of three-hit ball, striking out two. Junior
Matt Rigby, a former Wolverine, struck out one in a scoreless eighth.
In the ninth, however,
Jordan Schlehuber hit an RBI-double to extend the Wolverines' lead.
The Broncs close out the season with the second game of this doubleheader in approximately 30 minutes.
