LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the New Mexico State University Aggies 17-7 in eight innings on Friday at Presley Askew Field.
The Broncs (18-28-1, 3-18-1 WAC) took early leads, going up 2-0 in the second and 5-2 in the third.
In the second, senior
Jesus Garcia hit an RBI-single against
Riley Barr (4-6) and later scored on an error.
In the third, with runners on the corners and no one out, junior
Cole Loncar hit an RBI-single, and then, after a double-steal, junior
Correy Davis grounded out to bring home a run. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and one out, sophomore
Jacob Huckabay hit a chopper to third to drive-in a run and make it 5-2.
The Aggies (10-34-1, 6-15-1 WAC) used the long ball to get their first six runs against senior
Alex Henson (1-1). In the second,
Jay Sheeley hit a two-run shot, and in the third,
Brent Hermanussen hit a grand slam to give the Aggies the lead. Later in the third,
Kyle Graf hit an infield RBI-single and
Daniel Johnson doubled-in a run to make it 8-5.
That's where the score stayed until the fifth, when an RBI-double by Graf, a two-run double by Johnson and an RBI-single by
Cameron Haskins made it 12-5.
The Broncs got two back in the sixth when senior
Logan Landon launched his eighth home run of the season to make it 12-7.
The Aggies pushed their lead back out to seven in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by Graf and a bases loaded walk by
Joseph Koerper.
Derek Umphres hit a two-run home run in the seventh to make it 16-7, and then Johnson ended it with a home run in the eighth.
The Broncs and Aggies play the middle game of this three-game series on Saturday at 7 p.m.
