EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 1-0 double overtime loss to the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals in the second match of the UTRGV Tournament on Friday in front of a near capacity crowd at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Cardinals (1-0-0) won the match at 107:19 on a goal by
Abigail Koenigs in traffic on a short pass from
Alexis Santos after a corner kick was deflected.
That was the only goal against sophomore Harlingen South alum
Erica Gonzalez (0-1-0), who made two saves in addition to multiple diving stops to deflect close balls and prevent shots from occurring.
The Vaqueros (0-1-0) controlled the tempo for much of the first half, getting multiple good scoring opportunities resulting in four shots on goal, all of which were stopped
Karly Brightwell.
Heather Kowalik (1-0-0) made two saves over the final 62:19 for the win.
The Vaqueros close out the tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Southern. Incarnate Word plays Southern at 11 a.m. Gates open at 10 a.m.
In the first match of the day, South Carolina State beat Southern 5-1.
