EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season by closing out the UTRGV Tournament with a 3-0 win over the Southern University Jaguars on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The Vaqueros (1-1-0) got on the board right away, as sophomore Andreya Barrera bent a corner kick into the net at the 3:57 mark to make it 1-0. It's the second year in a row she has scored the program's first goal of the season.

In the second half, six newcomers, including four freshmen, scored their first points. The first of those points came at 57:38, when freshman Kelzy Jepsen buried a rebound opportunity into the far right corner of the net after freshman Malia Irvine setup the initial shot by junior Elisa Espino.

Then, at 81:39, freshman McAllen Memorial alum America Martinez converted a rebound opportunity on assists by junior Evelyn Powell and freshman Diandra Aliaga.

The Vaqueros outshot the Jaguars (0-2-0) 20-6, including 9-3 on goal.

Junior Maria Eriksen (1-0-0) made two saves for the win while Kendra Lewis (0-2-0) made six saves in the loss.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Friday at 5 p.m. when they host Prairie View A&M at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex in the first match of a women's and men's doubleheader. Gates open at 4.

In the first match of the day, Incarnate Word beat South Carolina State 1-0 in overtime to clinch the tournament championship.
