Volleyball Drops Islanders Classic Finale

Two Vaqueros Earn All-Tournament Team Honors

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros volleyball team fell to the host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 0-3 (17-25, 15-25, 15-25) in the final match of the Comfort Suites Islanders Classic on Saturday at Dugan Wellness Center.

Sophomore Bojana Mitrovic and junior Alisha Watson earned All-Tournament Team honors. Mitrovic averaged 3.78 kills and 2.33 digs per set. Watson averaged 2.89 kills while serving up four aces.

Mitrovic led the Vaqueros (5-5) with 12 kills and nine digs. Watson had six kills while senior Haley Durham had three.

Kelsee Felux led the Islanders (8-3) with 13 kills on .393 hitting. Brittany Gilpin had 12 kills on .579 hitting. Ivy Baresh finished with 10 kills. Kristyn Nicholson dished out 48 assists while Kate Klepetka had 27 digs.

The Vaqueros scored the first two points of the match, but the Islanders responded with a 7-2 run thanks in part to a pair of Gilpin kills. Mitrovic responded with a kill as the Vaqueros got back-to-back points to pull within one, but the Felux and Morgan Carlson had two kills each as the Islanders followed with an 11-2 run to push the set out of reach.

Gilpin had four early kills in the second set to help the Islanders jump out to a 10-4 lead. Another Gilpin kill allowed the Islanders to push their lead to nine for the first time at 17-8. A Mitrovic kill sparked a 3-0 run to help the Vaqueros pull within 15-21, but Felux and Baresh had kills to help the Islanders finish off the set.

Baresh had two kills as the Islanders led 7-3 out of the gate in the third set. A Mitrovic kill and a Baresh attack error allowed the Vaqueros to pull within 5-7. It was still a two-point set after freshman Dubravka Vukoja served an ace to make it 9-11, but the Islanders scored the next four points to pull away for the sweep.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when they open up the Cardinal Classic against host Lamar.
