EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros volleyball team swept the Southern University Jaguars 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-12) in their second match of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Tournament on Friday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Freshman
Fatoumata Dacosta led the Vaqueros (3-3) with 13 kills on .522 hitting with nine digs. Junior
Alisha Watson added 12 kills and two aces while
Bojana Mitrovic led the team with 12 digs.
Leilani Lealaimatafao led the Jaguars (0-5) with six kills on .357 hitting. Diamond Williams posted a match-high 17 digs.
The first set saw the Vaqueros jump out to a 6-2 lead after senior
Haley Durham and freshman
Alexandra Ecker teamed up on a block. Later in the set, the Jaguars tied it at 10 after a block by Shauntia Carr and Keandra Williams but the Vaqueros closed out the set on a 15-3 run that saw Dacosta close it out with a kill.
In the second set, the Jaguars took an early lead after a kill by Melodie Malone, which made it 5-4 but the Vaqueros took the lead after a pair of kills from sophomore
Tina Sekulic and Durham. Dacosta led an 18-5 Vaqueros run with six kills and seven digs.
In the final set the Vaqueros took control early as a couple of kills from Dacosta pushed their lead to 10-3. Durham added a kill later in the set that extended the Vaqueros lead to 14-7. Watson later closed out the match with one of her two aces as the Vaqueros completed the sweep.
The Vaqueros close out the UTRGV Tournament on Saturday when they face San Jose State University at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
