CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team closed out a weekend road trip with a 2-2 double overtime tie against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday at Dugan Soccer Stadium.
The Vaqueros (1-2-2) got on the board in the first five minutes when sophomore
Andreya Barrera sent a low cross to the right side so freshman
Malia Irvine could score her first-career goal.
The Islanders (0-4-1) tied the match four minutes into the second half when
Nanna Poulsen sent a swinging cross to
Yvette Franco who struck from the top of the box.
Franco scored again 21 minutes later when, on a breakaway, she cut back past her defender to score from six yards out after a pass from
Hannah Joseph.
The Vaqueros tied the match with three and a half minutes left in regulation when
Meghan Oram notched her first-career goal to send the match to overtime.
Sophomore Harlingen South alum
Erica Gonzalez (0-2-2) made a season-high seven saves.
Megan Delaney (0-4-1) made one save.
The Islanders outshot the Vaqueros 20-6, including 9-3 on goal.
The Vaqueros return home on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host South Dakota in the first match of the second UTRGV Tournament. Southern Utah plays Houston Baptist at 5 p.m. Gates open at 4.
