CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team is set to face the No. 61 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Last Time OutThe Vaqueros opened up their season with a 6-1 victory over the University of Maryland Baltimore Country Retrievers on Wednesday.
After taking the doubles point after the team of
Harry Wells and
Cosme Jubera clinched it for the Vaqueros (1-0), they continued their strong performance by winning five of the six singles matches.
After UMBC tied the match at one apiece with a singles win on court three, the Vaqueros rallied with five straight wins starting on court five with
Yehonatan Kaufman's victory.
Elliot Johnstone followed with a win on court six with
Koby Jansen following with a win on court two.
Cosme Jubera trailed 1-5 in the first set but rallied to win the set and the match on court four and it was
Juan Cruz Soria closing the match with a win on court one.
Scouting the IslandersThe Islanders are coming off of a pair of victories over UMBC on Friday as they played a doubleheader with the Islanders winning 4-2 and 4-0. With the two wins, the Islanders are now 4-0 on the season.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi brings back seven from last year and are currently ranked No. 61 in the ITA Rankings.
Kevin Bettendroffer and Ricardo Mayagoitia lead the way. Bettendroffer leads the way with a 4-0 record in singles.
The All-Time SeriesThe Vaqueros are 13-38-1 all-time against the Islanders in a series that dates back to 1961. The Vaqueros last defeated the Islanders on March 10, 2010.
Both of these teams faced off last season when the Islanders came away with a 4-0 victory on April 19, 2015 in Corpus Christi.
GlobetrottersThe Vaqueros currently have eight student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Australia, Spain, Israel and Argentina.
Next UpThe Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday, January 31 when they head to Dallas to face the No. 46 SMU Mustangs at 5 p.m.
