Live ScoringDALLAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team is set to face off against No. 49 Southern Methodist University Mustangs on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the SMU Tennis Center.
Last Time OutThe Vaqueros recorded their second win of the season after defeating Concordia 7-0 on Friday in Austin.
After sweeping through doubles, the Vaqueros continued to roll as they recorded a trio of 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles. Jansen didn't drop a game to Victor Escalon on court two while
Yehonatan Kaufman did the same on court five against Micah Austin and
Elliot Johnstone followed suit against Jack Proctor on court six.
Juan Cruz Soria defeated Gabiel Borunda 6-3, 6-2 on court one while
Ethan Ammon defeated Iousa Malaki 6-2, 6-1 on court three.
Scouting the MustangsThe Mustangs are 1-2 on the season after falling to No. 26 Texas on Thursday. SMU will face Depaul on Sunday morning before facing the Vaqueros.
SMU have accumulated a 25-10 doubles record this season. The duo of Nate Lammons and Arkadijs Slobodkins are 6-2 so far this spring and 1-1 against ranked opponents. The duo is also ranked 16
th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The team of Hunter and Yates Johnson have a team best 11 combined doubles wins.
The Mustangs are just 4-7 in singles matches this season with Samm Butler, Hunter Johnson, Markus Kerner and Ronald Slobodchikov each have recorded a win.
The All-Time SeriesThe Vaqueros are 1-15 all-time against the Mustangs in a series that dates back to 1969. The lone win for UTRGV came back in 1977.
The Vaqueros and Mustangs faced off last season with the Mustangs picking up the 7-0 win on March 15, 2015.
GlobetrottersThe Vaqueros currently have eight student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Australia, Spain, Israel and Argentina.
Next UpThe Vaqueros return to the court on February 5 when they head to College Station to face the No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies and the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
