Bernesha Peters combined for 43 points to lead the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team past the Utah Valley University Wolverines 61-48 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The Vaqueros are now a program record 10-7 overall and 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Vaqueros are 6-0 at home for the first time since 2010-11 and third time ever.
Goff led all scorers with a season-high 23 points on a season-best 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc and a season-high eight rebounds. Peters broke her career high in scoring for the second-straight game with 20 points while going 4-for-7 from behind the arc.
Sam Loggins and
Mariah Seals led the Wolverines (7-10, 0-2 WAC) with 11 points each.
The game was tight for most of the first quarter, but in the final minute, with the Vaqueros up 12-10, sophomore
Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir hit a three as the Vaqueros hit eight of their next 11 baskets, including a 6-for-6 performance from behind the arc, to go on a 22-8 run and take a 34-18 lead on a Goff three at the 4:43 mark of the second.
The Vaqueros finished 10-for-28 from behind the arc.
The Vaqueros extended their lead to 17 for the first time when a Peters three made it 43-27 mid-way through the third quarter.
The Vaqueros took their largest lead of the game at 53-35 on a Goff jumper at the end of the third.
The Wolverines opened the fourth quarter on a 13-4 run to pull within nine, but freshman
Nichele Hyman and Goff each made a pair of free throws to put the game on ice.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they visit Chicago State.
