Guard Play Sparks Women’s Basketball to Win Over Utah Valley

EDINBURG – Junior Shawnte' Goff and freshman Bernesha Peters combined for 43 points to lead the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team past the Utah Valley University Wolverines 61-48 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

The Vaqueros are now a program record 10-7 overall and 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Vaqueros are 6-0 at home for the first time since 2010-11 and third time ever.

Goff led all scorers with a season-high 23 points on a season-best 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc and a season-high eight rebounds. Peters broke her career high in scoring for the second-straight game with 20 points while going 4-for-7 from behind the arc.

Sam Loggins and Mariah Seals led the Wolverines (7-10, 0-2 WAC) with 11 points each.

The game was tight for most of the first quarter, but in the final minute, with the Vaqueros up 12-10, sophomore Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir hit a three as the Vaqueros hit eight of their next 11 baskets, including a 6-for-6 performance from behind the arc, to go on a 22-8 run and take a 34-18 lead on a Goff three at the 4:43 mark of the second.

The Vaqueros finished 10-for-28 from behind the arc.

The Vaqueros extended their lead to 17 for the first time when a Peters three made it 43-27 mid-way through the third quarter.

The Vaqueros took their largest lead of the game at 53-35 on a Goff jumper at the end of the third.

The Wolverines opened the fourth quarter on a 13-4 run to pull within nine, but freshman Nichele Hyman and Goff each made a pair of free throws to put the game on ice.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they visit Chicago State.
