EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team fell to CSU Bakersfield 1-3 (21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25) on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Senior Alisha Watson led UTRGV (16-10, 5-5 WAC) with 12 kills, seven digs and five blocks. Sophomore Ragni Steen Knudsen recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs. Junior Bojana Mitrovic posted 10 kills with nine digs and five blocks. Freshman Barbara Silva came up with a career-high tying nine blocks to go with five kills and five digs.

Carol Grasso led CSU Bakersfield (9-13, 6-3 WAC) with 18 kills, 15 digs and five aces. Katie Dunbar-Lowe had 13 kills. Kortney Freeland finished with 10 kills.

CSU Bakersfield controlled much of the first set, reaching set point at 24-18. A kill by Silva and an ace by Watson helped UTRGV score three-straight before a Dunbar-Lowe kill ended the set.

UTRGV rode that momentum into the second set, scoring the first five points before going up 8-1 on a Mitrovic block. UTRGV extended its lead to 13-4 on a block by sophomores Alexandra Ecker and Dubravka Vukoja and 15-6 on a Watson kill. CSU Bakersfield scored the next five to pull within four, but that's as close as they got.

Down 1-3 early in the third set, UTRGV scored four-straight points as part of a 13-3 run to go up 14-6 on a Vukoja kill. CSU Bakersfield responded by scoring the next five points as part of a 14-4 run to take a 20-18 lead. UTRGV came back to take leads of 22-21 and 23-22 on errors, but a Fabiana Andrade kill and two Grasso kills ended the set.

UTRGV jumped out to a 4-1 lead on a Watson kill in the fourth set. CSU Bakersfield came back to tie it at 5 on a block by Freeland and Sydney Haynes. The set was tight the rest of the way. UTRGV tied it at 17 on an Ecker kill before a pair of Grasso kills helped CSU Bakersfield go up 20-17. CSU Bakersfield reached match point at 24-19 on a Dunbar-Lowe kill before kills by Watson and Mitrovic helped UTRGV pull within two, but a block by Dunbar-Lowe and Freeland ended the match.

UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 12 p.m. when it hosts Grand Canyon at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Doors open at 11 a.m.
