IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's basketball team fell to Iowa 95-67 on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Sophomore
Antonio Green led UTRGV (0-4) with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior
Mike Hoffman scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc, with seven rebounds. Junior
Nick Dixon scored 12 points with six rebounds and three assists.
Peter Jok led Iowa (3-1) with 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc.
Tyler Cook scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Isaiah Moss scored 14 points.
Brady Ellingson finished with 11 points.
Jok hit a trio of early three-pointers and two jumpers to help Iowa build a 20-5 lead over the first seven minutes.
Iowa still led by 15 at 23-8 when Dixon made a pair of free throws to spark a 9-2 run to bring UTRGV within 25-17.
Cook responded with a pair of free throws and
Nicholas Baer made a layup to push Iowa's lead back out to 12, but Hoffman bookended an 11-4 run with three-pointers to help UTRGV pull within 33-28 with 4:02 remaining in the half. Iowa scored the next nine points, however, to build a 14-point lead.
Iowa led 46-33 at haltime and opened the second half on a 24-7 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when it visits Southeast Missouri State.
